Seas the Day Specs

SeastheDay.jpgSeas the Day is our first boat.  In fact neither of us were ever on a sailboat before we bought our Lagoon 420.  We figured that we were too old to start small.  We also liked the idea of getting a new boat.   There are differing opinions about this.  Of course, the assessed value drops immediately, but we were in it for the long haul.  We didn’t want to buy someone else’s problems. Little did we know how expensive it is to outfit a boat.  Some of the items we have purchased are in the drop down menu below “Boat.”  Of course, on a used boat, most of these are included in the purchase price.

Seas the Day is Hull 71 of the infamous Lagoon attempt at manufacturing a hybrid sailboat.  It was a mistake which some owners figured out sooner than others.  We were one of the last to convert the propulsion system to twin diesel 40 HP Yanmar engines.  There were many advantages to the hybrid system.  The engine was electric and very quiet. It was very easy to maneuver with the electric engine.  We had plenty of power on the boat to use a variety of appliances.  But, we were heavy and slow.  The hybrid system was not reliable and at times put us in dangerous situations.  On March 20, 2012, the conversion to diesel began.  For a detailed description of this process, go to the March 20 blog on our old website and read the next two entries.

The size of Seas the Day’s interior, cockpit and deck made the transition from a house to living on a boat easy.  After the propulsion conversion the boat is much lighter and faster. While we were inexperienced when we first started looking at boats to purchase, in retrospect I don’t think we would have been as pleased with any other boat.

The living area of the Lagoon 420 is very comfortable.  The port hull has the master cabin with a queen-size bed, an office with numerous bookshelves and a computer/printer station and desk, two closets and numerous drawers, and a head with a shower, sink, mirrored cabinet, toilet and  a washer/dryer.  The starboard hull has two guest cabins with queen-size beds, closets and drawers, and each cabin has a full head with shower, toilet, sink and mirrored cabinet.  The salon/galley area has a 360 degree view through vertical windows which is a feature of all Lagoon catamarans.  There is a sliding glass door to the cockpit and a large sliding pass-through window above the sink to the cockpit.  There is a large salon table and seating for six people.  The nav station and chart table have room for a second computer which we use as our inside chart plotter.  In the salon, we have a TV with Direct TV service through a Satellite Dome on the bimini and also an antenna in the mast if/when we can’t get satellite TV. Mark put hinges on the salon bench so we don’t have to remove the cushion to get in it. There is abundant storage under all the salon seats and in cabinets in the galley and salon.  We have a refrigerator, freezer and ice maker in the galley, as well as a second refrigerator in the cockpit.  The cockpit has seating for eight.  Mark has made a drop leaf table for the cockpit so we can eat out there.  We also have a lower “cocktail table” which can go in the salon or cockpit in place of the larger tables.  Additional seating is available on the foredeck with sunbrella cushions matching the ones in the cockpit.  We have added sunshades enclosing the large cockpit, which reduces the temperature and limits people being able to see in although we can easily see out, thus providing privacy.  On the hard bimini, Mark has installed a wind generator, five solar panels, and the satellite dome.

These are the specs for our Lagoon 420. We had the mast cut down four feet to be able to go under 65 ft bridges and added an extra water tank.
